The Cars were originally founded in Boston in the mid-seventies. Gaining a record deal with Elektra records in 1977 the Cars released their self-titled debut album in the summer of 1978. They were considered one of the New Wave of guitar led rock bands who also integrated synths into their basic guitar bass drums line up and this sound gained the band instant success. Another plus for the band was that in songwriter Ric Ocasek they had one of the best songwriters of intelligent pop/rock music of the time. The first album included three songs which would be lifted as singles (Good Times Roll, Just What I Needed and My Best Friends Girl) all of which charted heavily in the summer and autumn of 1978. The album itself however was also hugely successful going on to stay in the album charts for a run of 139 weeks and subsequently going on to earn a six times platinum certification in the mid-nineties. The band was also successful in many territories across the world and over the life of the original band would go on to play massive concerts and release a number of hugely popular albums including Candy-O, Panorama and Heartbeat City. By the time of Heartbeat City in 1984 the band had enjoyed an amazing run of success however with this album produced by British producer Roy Thomas Baker the band were about to enjoy the biggest selling album of their career. The initial release of the album saw the singles Magic, You Might Think, Hello Again, Why Can t I Have You and Drive (The last four of which are included in this performance). The single drive was used during the broadcast of Live Aid which the Cars also appeared at but this time the song was played over footage of the Ethiopian famine. The film was prepared by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and introduced by David Bowie. The film struck a chord with people and propelled the song back into the charts in 1985 in the UK raising money for Band Aid. This concert recorded at Hearnes Center Field House University of Missouri Columbia, as well as featuring four tracks from the bands current album Door To Door also featured songs from across the bands career including many of the hit singles including My Best Friends Girl, Moving In Stereo and Just What I Needed from the debut album. Let s Go from Candy O, Touch and Go from Panorama, Since You re Gone from Shake It Up and of course You Might Think and Drive from Heartbeat City. All in all this set is a veritable Greatest Hits set which as you might think goes down incredibly well with the audience. The band would go on hiatus shortly after this tour and indeed shortly after this concert date with the members going on to solo careers and other projects. In 2005 founder members Elliott Easton and Greg Hawkes joined up with Tubes drummer Prarie Prince Kasim Sultan and Todd Rundgren to form The New Cars . The band performed some new material alongside older Cars material. This presaged a reunion of the original line up in 2010 when the band recorded a new album dedicated to founder member Benjamin Orr who had died in October 2000. The album Move Like This was released in 2011 and the band embarked on a short tour to promote the album which debuted inside the top ten of the Billboard charts at number 7. 1: tonight she comes 2: touch and go 3: double trouble 4: you are the girl 5: everything you say 6: since you're gone 7: nightspots
