Salvator Rosa (22 July 1615 in Arenella (Naples); 15 March 1673 in Rome) was an Italian draughtsman, painter, poet, and actor. Rosa belongs to the most extravagant artistic personalities of the 17th century.His depictions of wild and mountainous landscapes are among his most popular and influential works, which form an extreme contrast to the pastoral landscapes of his contemporary Claude Lorraine. However, his motifs also include grim picture themes as well as philosophical allegories and histories. As a poet, he is one of the most important Italian satirists of his time. The portraits of Rosa are very characteristic and expressive, which suggests their resemblance to the persons posing before him. In those landscapes that came out from under his brush during his stay in Florence, such as the large seaside view at the Galleria Colonna in Rome, experts of painting see the influence of Claude Lorraine. In other paintings of this kind, one can notice some delicacy and lethargy. As for the atmosphere of his paintings, it should be said that at all there are not of great brilliance, but it is extremely pleasant in its warmth and maturity of light shade.Among his famous disciples is Carlo Bonavia.Rose composed several dramas in which he sometimes acted as an actor, as well as a number of sharp satyrs.
